The 17th Grade

A network for those who are learning about teaching

During a classroom observation a couple of weeks ago, I witnessed a music teacher use a new "10-second" rule. She held both her hands up and said, "It's time for the 10-second rule!" Then she called on a student and told him to tell what he did during the weekend. As he began to talk, the teacher's fingers began to tick down the seconds. When all the fingers were gone, the student's time was up and the teacher called on another student.

I thought this was a great tool to help the student's limit what they said to their most important points. I'd been with the class for a couple of days before this experience and noticed that when the students answered questions in class they tended to ramble or be off-topic. Sometimes they would immediately put their hand in the air, and when called upon, didn't have a thing to say. I think this would be a great tool to encourage students think ahead about what they want to say. It helps the students keep "the main thing the main thing".
